Implementing SeloVerde Platform and CAR 2.0 System in Minas Gerais, Brazil

Transparency, Traceability, and Support Systems for Public Policy Implementation in Minas Gerais

Covering approximately 7% of Brazil’s territory, Minas Gerais is the country’s third-largest economy and the second-largest in agricultural production value. However, of its nearly one million rural environmental registrations (CAR), less than 1% had been analyzed by the state as of 2023. This underscores an urgent need for reliable and official information on environmental compliance and agricultural production in rural properties across the state. In this context, the project seeks to establish partnerships to provide the State of Minas Gerais with free, transparent tools focused on socio-environmental compliance assessments for all private rural properties involved in supply chains at potential risk of deforestation. Additionally, it aims to expedite the analysis of environmental registrations through automated CAR assessments.

METHODOLOGY

To assess the risk of fire spread, a model will be developed on the DINAMICA EGO platform that predicts fire behavior in the state based on an ignition point and a set of environmental variables. The results will be disseminated in the form of texts and videos directed to key actors and local media informing about fire risks and damages, in order to help the competent authorities to promptly prevent forest fires. Furthermore, as a form of social awareness and provision of technical assistance, landowners will be encouraged to adopt better land use practices that reduce the risk of fires.

RESULTS

In addition to socio-environmental compliance data for all registered rural properties in Minas Gerais and the supply chains of coffee, soy, planted forests, and cattle, this project also enabled the inclusion of compliance analyses for the sugar-energy sector and other products under the Certifica Minas program. All information is accessible through the SeloVerde MG platform.

Launched in July 2024, the CAR 2.0 MG system automatically analyzed all rural properties registered in the state’s CAR, with 37% of analyses successfully completed without pending issues.
